The
most popular style of home unit buildings is the so-called
3 storey walk-up units. Pictured is one of such buildings
constructed by Chiha Developments in the Sydney suburb of
Dee Why.
An
underground parking area had to be accommodated partly in
sand and partly in rock. Columns and walls were bearing
directly on rock or were piered to rock. Whilst minimum
construction depth was desirable, beams over the carparking
area had to span over 7.0 metre wide driveways and deflections
had to be minimised to reduce long term brickwork cracking
in the suspended walls.

The
building was also split into 2 levels to adjust its height
to the residual slopes of the land. The photomontage of
the building shows how a pleasant structure was achieved
with large balconies supported on slender round concrete
columns. The developer was apparently very happy with the
result both in financial as well as aesthetic outcomes.
This was one of more than 15 similar buildings which Kneebone
& Beretta Consulting Engineers Pty Ltd designed for
Chiha Developments. |
